For years, e-filing 1099s mostly meant getting Copy A to the IRS before the deadline. Tax Year 2026 forms are filed in January 2027, and the IRS's free IRIS Taxpayer Portal now handles that federal step at no cost.
IRS IRIS vs. Paid 1099 Filing Software: When Paying Is Worth It
For a business filing a few hundred forms across several states, though, the federal upload is rarely the hard part. The work piles up around it: applying for a Transmitter Control Code, splitting files into batches of 100, filing directly with states outside the federal/state program, printing and mailing recipient copies, and fixing TIN mismatches before rejections come back. Paid software earns its fee when it takes that surrounding work off your desk.
In October 2026, we evaluated seven paid 1099 filing platforms against the free IRIS Taxpayer Portal, using published product pages, current pricing, and public review evidence. The evaluation focused on the work IRIS leaves to the business: state reporting, recipient delivery, volume, setup, and corrections.
We scored each platform on these weighted factors:
- Filing completeness beyond federal e-file (22%): Whether direct state filing, print and mail, and online recipient delivery happen in the same workflow as the federal submission.
- Volume and data import (18%): Bulk imports, integrations, and templates that remove the IRIS portal's 100-returns-per-submission ceiling.
- All-in cost at scale (16%): The published cost of a complete filing, including add-ons, measured against the IRIS portal's $0.
- Setup burden (14%): What a business has to do before its first filing, including whether it needs its own TCC and ID.me access.
- Corrections and filing-status visibility (12%): Support for corrections, prior-year forms, and acceptance or rejection tracking.
- TIN matching (10%): Checking recipient names and TINs against IRS records before submission, with any plan limits stated.
- Live human support (8%): Access to phone or chat help from real people during the filing window.
In the table below, the seven paid platforms are ranked and scored on a 10-point scale, with the IRIS Taxpayer Portal shown as an unscored baseline. A company-by-company analysis follows.

IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal, the free federal baseline
The IRIS Taxpayer Portal is the IRS's no-cost way to e-file 1099-series and related information returns. Businesses key in data or upload a .csv file, submit up to 100 returns at a time, take part in the Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) Program, request automatic extensions, and file certain corrections. The portal runs basic validation before submission, keeps a record of completed and filed forms, and produces PDF recipient copies for the business to distribute. For Tax Year 2026 forms filed in 2027, IRIS is also the only IRS electronic filing system for information returns. FIRE stops accepting submissions after its November 2026 maintenance window.
The cost of the portal is setup and follow-through. You need an IRIS Transmitter Control Code to use it, and while the IRS says applications are usually completed within 24 hours, it advises allowing up to 45 days. W-2s go to the Social Security Administration, not IRIS. Direct state filings outside CF/SF, printing and mailing, and TIN matching aren't among the portal's listed features, and PDF downloads for some continuous-use forms no longer include a payer copy. For a business with a handful of 1099s, recipients in CF/SF states, and clean recipient data, IRIS can cover the whole job. Each added state, payer, or batch of 100 forms moves more manual work back onto the filer.
- Location: Internal Revenue Service (federal)
- Delivery Model: Self-service web portal operated by the IRS
- Price Range: Free
- Review Score: Not applicable
- Services: Federal e-file of 1099-series and related returns, CF/SF participation, automatic extensions, certain corrections, downloadable recipient copies
Summary of Online Reviews
Not applicable. IRIS is a government filing portal with no public customer-review profile.
Yearli, for complete federal, state, and recipient filing
Yearli by Greatland makes complex year-end wage and information reporting simple, fast, and reliable, helping businesses file W-2, 1099, and 1095 forms with confidence instead of stress. For a business weighing IRIS, the first difference is the transmitter. Filers don't need their own TCC, because Yearli's authorized e-file service submits for them, which takes a possible 45-day application off a January timeline. Yearli Core and Yearli Performance include federal filing, direct state filing where applicable, recipient print and mail with postage, and secure online recipient delivery in one per-form price. Data comes in through 40+ integrations or a generic import template.
The trade-off is price at lower volumes. Yearli Core is $6.49 per form, and Yearli Performance pairs a $129 annual subscription with rates from $6.99 down to $2.51 per form above 1,000 forms. efile4Biz and 1099Express publish lower bundle rates, so Yearli trails both on cost while leading on the more heavily weighted completeness, import, and setup factors. The gap narrows for businesses filing directly in several states, since those fees are add-ons elsewhere. Unlimited free TIN matching and phone support come with Yearli Performance and Yearli Premier, while Yearli Core uses per-form TIN matching with chat and email support. Yearli Premier, at $799 per year plus filing fees, adds team management and à la carte pricing.
- Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Delivery Model: Online platform; Yearli's authorized e-file service transmits for the business
- Price Range: Yearli Core $6.49/form; Yearli Performance $129/yr plus $6.99 to $2.51/form; Yearli Premier $799/yr plus filing fees, as of 10/2026 (pricing)
- Review Score: 4.8/5 on Shopper Approved across 81,700+ verified reviews, as of 10/2026
- Services: W-2, 1099 & 1095 filing, federal filing, state filing, print and mail, secure online recipient delivery, TIN matching, imports and integrations
Summary of Online Reviews
Customers describe a website that is "very easy to navigate due to the step by step instructions provided." Others call it "easy to use" and say it "saves me a lot of time," and Shopper Approved reviewers also note "great customer service."
efile4Biz, for pay-as-you-go full-service filing
efile4Biz is a cloud filing service for 1099, W-2, 1098, and ACA forms, and it handles the part of the job IRIS gives back to the business: recipient copies. Its E-File, Print & Mail option combines federal submission with printing and mailing at published per-form rates that start at $5.25 for 1 to 25 forms and fall to $1.50 above 5,000, with no subscription on its basic pay-as-you-go plan. Businesses don't set up a TCC or ID.me account, because efile4Biz transmits under its own IRS and SSA credentials. Imports run through an Excel template, QuickBooks Online, a QuickBooks Desktop plug-in, and the Xero API, and businesses with more than 300 forms can hand the whole job to its service bureau team.
State filing is where buyers should run the numbers. Direct-to-state filings cost an extra $1 per form, per state, across the 29 jurisdictions on its pricing page, and state reconciliation forms aren't available, so those have to be filed separately. 1099 Pro outscores efile4Biz on imports, corrections, and TIN matching, but efile4Biz places second because its advantages in completeness, cost, and setup carry more combined weight. TIN matching is $1 per record on the pay-as-you-go plan, and the $149-per-year team plan includes 250 free matches and up to 10 users with separate permission levels.
- Location: Pompano Beach, Florida
- Delivery Model: Online platform with an optional service bureau for larger jobs
- Price Range: $5.25 to $1.50/form for e-file, print and mail; $3.40 to $1.00/form e-file only; direct state $1/form per state, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: 4.5/5 TrustScore on Trustpilot across 12,100+ reviews, as of 10/2026
- Services: 1099, W-2, 1098, 1042-S, and ACA filing, print and mail, direct state filing, corrections, TIN matching, W-9 collection
Summary of Online Reviews
Reviewers call efile4Biz "so easy to use and reasonably priced" and say "the process was fairly painless, and the cost was very reasonable." Some reviewers, however, report difficulty reaching support when a filing error needs a quick answer.
Tax-Aid Filing, for accounting and tax professionals
Tax-Aid Filing, based in Minneapolis, is built for tax and accounting professionals who file for clients, and it now also serves former EagleView filing customers. Its online platform covers federal and state W-2 & 1099 filing, ACA forms and corrections, TIN matching, recipient distribution by mail or online access, and 94X returns, with QuickBooks Online and Xero imports plus Excel and CSV templates. A client portal, scheduled filing, internal audit tools, and workflow management help firms queue filings across many payers. Additional users cost nothing, and prepaid filing credits never expire, which suits firms with changing client counts.
Every service is priced as a separate line. Federal e-file runs from $2.89 per form for the first 25 down to $0.99 above 5,000, state e-file adds $1.25 to $2.89 per form depending on the form, postal mailing adds $2.19 to $2.99, and online access adds $0.50. Tiers apply incrementally, so the first 25 forms in every order carry the highest rate. A complete federal, state, and mailed filing lands well above the $0.99 headline, so buyers should add up all four lines. TIN matching costs $0.90 per verification with results within 24 hours, so a mismatch caught late in January still needs a day to clear. Public review evidence is limited to testimonials the company publishes on its own site.
- Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Delivery Model: Online platform with pay-as-you-go or prepaid credits
- Price Range: $2.89 to $0.99/form federal e-file; state, mail, and online access priced separately, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: Not publicly listed
- Services: W-2 & 1099 federal and state filing, ACA filing, 94X filing, TIN matching, recipient mail and online access, client portal
Summary of Online Reviews
Professional users write that "all phases of the W2/1099 site went well" and praise its "great customer service." Another calls it "easy to use, very user friendly and efficient," although these are testimonials on the company's own site.
1099 Pro, for validation-heavy subscription filing
1099 Pro, part of Sovos since 2021, offers 1099Pro Cloud as a subscription platform for 1099, 1098, 1042, W-2, and 3921/3922 reporting. Its standout is TIN validation. Bulk TIN matching runs when recipient records are imported, up to 10,000 at a time, and real-time validation checks name and TIN combinations against IRS records, the OFAC list, and the Death Master File. Imports accept the IRS 1220 format, CSV files, and built-in templates, which helps former FIRE users who already have files in the older layout. Correction management includes automated IRS submission tracking.
The subscription model is the trade-off for this audience. The pricing page lists e-file only at both $449 and $499 per year, up to $714 for e-file, print and mail, and eDelivery, each covering 100 forms, and forms beyond the plan limit are billed as overages at the plan's effective per-form rate. Direct state reporting for 1099-NEC and W-2 is an add-on, though CF/SF filing is included. For a business filing 250 forms on a 100-form plan, those overages push the per-form cost well above the pay-as-you-go options here, which is why 1099 Pro trails on cost despite the best TIN matching score in the table. Support runs through the Sovos support portal, and the 7-day free trial disables IRS transmittals until a subscription starts.
- Location: California (part of Sovos)
- Delivery Model: Cloud subscription, with a separate desktop product
- Price Range: $449 or $499/yr e-file only (both listed) to $714/yr, for up to 100 forms, plus overages and add-ons, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: 4.3/5 for ease of use and 4.3/5 for customer service on Capterra, as of 10/2026
- Services: 1099, 1098, 1042, W-2, and 3921/3922 filing, TIN matching, CF/SF and direct state reporting, print and mail, eDelivery, corrections
Summary of Online Reviews
Accountants on Capterra describe "a straightforward product that expedites 1099 filings," and one says it suits accountants who file for multiple businesses. Others found it "fairly easy to use," although some mention "a lot of up-sell attempts" and say imports need very specific raw data.
1099FIRE, for hands-off IRIS transmission
1099FIRE, operated by National Software in Phoenix, suits businesses that want IRIS filing handled without touching the IRS setup at all. With its IRIS filing service, businesses upload Excel or CSV data, and its team formats the file, runs validation checks, sends PDF copies back for approval, and transmits through its IRS A2A channel. The business doesn't apply for a TCC, complete ID.me access, or build XML files. Pricing starts at $249 per filing plus $0.28 per recipient, and one filing can include unlimited payer EINs for a single form type, with CF/SF filing included where it applies. That structure favors filers with one or two form types and many payers, such as a parent company reporting for several entities.
Extras sit outside the base rate. Printing and mailing is an add-on without a published rate, TIN matching runs $0.50 to $0.15 per check in prepaid credit packs, client sub-accounts cost $20 each, and direct state filing isn't publicly detailed, so get a written quote. Each additional form type is its own filing, which adds up for a business sending 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-INT forms. 1099FIRE earns the highest support score in this comparison, backed by U.S.-based phone and email specialists. It places fifth because completeness and TIN matching carry more combined weight than support.
- Location: Phoenix, Arizona
- Delivery Model: Managed filing service through the IRS A2A channel
- Price Range: From $249/filing plus $0.28/recipient; mailing and TIN matching extra, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: 5.0/5 on Google across 44 reviews, as of 10/2026
- Services: IRIS filing for 1097, 1098, 1099, 5498, 1042-S, 3921, 3922, W-2G, 8027, and 8955-SSA forms, corrections and prior years, print and mail, TIN matching, ACA filing
Summary of Online Reviews
Reviews say the team will "pick up the phone and help with issues" and call the service "reliable, cost-effective, and highly efficient." Others describe staff as "knowledgeable and professional," although the review sample is small and centers more on support than pricing.
1099Express, for low-cost print-and-mail volume
1099Express, based in McQueeney, Texas, has offered IRS-approved information reporting software since 1996 and moved its software online starting September 1, 2026. It transmits to IRIS and the SSA under its own TCC, so businesses skip the IRS application, and files uploaded by 4:30 p.m. CST are processed the same day. Its service bureau publishes the lowest full-service rate in this comparison: $2.04 per form to print, mail, and e-file 1099, 1098, and W-2G forms at 1 to 1,000 forms, falling to $1.24 above 15,000, with CF/SF filing included. E-file-only pricing starts at $1.99 per form with a $75 minimum charge.
Lower cost comes with more setup and fewer delivery options. Filing requires a software license starting at $199 for one user, and data intake centers on Excel templates and pasted spreadsheet data instead of named accounting integrations. Online recipient delivery isn't listed among its services, and required direct state filings for 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-K carry separate state fees. Interactive TIN matching is $1 per check, and bulk matching is $75 per file. Businesses that used the earlier downloadable version should confirm how prior-year data carries over before January. 1099Express has the best cost score in the table but places sixth, because cost carries 16% of the weight while completeness, imports, and setup together carry 54%.
- Location: McQueeney, Texas
- Delivery Model: Online software license with an optional service bureau
- Price Range: $2.04 to $1.24/form for print, mail, and e-file; e-file only from $1.99/form with a $75 minimum; licenses from $199, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: Not publicly listed
- Services: 1099, W-2, 1042-S, and 1095 filing, print and mail, TIN matching, corrections, prior-year filing

WageFiling, for low-volume federal-only filing
WageFiling is a per-form e-file service for 1099-NEC, MISC, DIV, INT, 1098 mortgage, W-2, and W-2C forms. It's the closest paid equivalent to the IRIS portal: a business enters data online, WageFiling e-files Copy A to the IRS or SSA and confirms the filing, and the business gets PDF recipient copies to mail or, with payee consent, email. The draw is handing federal transmission to WageFiling instead of using the IRS portal, at $3.49 per form on its homepage or $3.69 per original form in its FAQ, with prior-year forms and corrections at $4.99. It also files W-2s with the SSA, which IRIS doesn't accept, and offers bilingual chat support.
The limits show up as a business grows. WageFiling participates in CF/SF, but recipient copies, mailing, and direct state filings stay with the business, the same workload IRIS leaves behind. No bulk import or named integration is listed, and TIN matching isn't among its listed features. For a business with a handful of forms, WageFiling is a reasonable middle step between free and full service. For one with hundreds of forms, several states, or mailed copies, it covers only the federal portion. Its strongest score is setup, and its last-place rank reflects how heavily completeness and data import weigh for filers outgrowing IRIS.
- Location: Michigan
- Delivery Model: Online e-file service; business distributes recipient copies
- Price Range: $3.49/form on its homepage, $3.69/form original in its FAQ; $4.99/form for prior-year forms or corrections, as of 10/2026
- Review Score: Not publicly listed
- Services: IRS and SSA e-file with CF/SF participation for 1099-NEC, MISC, DIV, INT, 1098 mortgage, W-2, and W-2C forms, SSN masking, filing confirmation
