1099 Filing Deadlines for Tax Year 2026

As the 2026 tax year comes to a close, businesses face a short filing window for W-2, 1099, and 1095 forms. These forms cover wage reporting, contractor and vendor payments, and health coverage reporting, and federal agencies expect them on time.

This guide draws on IRS publications, federal guidance, and Yearli platform context to summarize the tax year 2026 W-2, 1099 & 1095 filing deadline landscape for U.S. businesses filing in early 2027. Yearli supports approximately 50,000 annual business customers and is backed by Greatland's 50-year history in wage and information reporting. Whether you're a Small Filer filing a handful of forms or an accountant managing dozens across multiple form types, this guide covers the dates that matter for tax year 2026 forms, filed in early 2027.

Note: These deadlines generally apply to forms reporting tax year 2026 activity, filed in early 2027, unless otherwise noted.

Tax Year 2026 W-2, 1099 & 1095 Filing Deadlines

The table below maps recipient copy deadlines and IRS filing deadlines for major year-end information returns filed in early 2027. When a statutory deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the next business day. Businesses with 10 or more covered information returns in aggregate must file electronically for tax years beginning in 2023, per IRS T.D. 9972. For a full deadline calendar that includes state-specific due dates, see Yearli's W-2, 1099 & 1095 Deadline Calculator.

For tax year 2026 coverage furnished in early 2027, the recipient copy deadline is March 2, 2027. The paper filing deadline that would normally fall on February 28 (a Sunday in 2027) moves to the next business day, March 1, 2027. Businesses should confirm current federal and state requirements through IRS.gov, state agencies, or Yearli's deadline resources.

Compliance Disclaimer: Deadlines can vary by form, filing method, tax year, and state. Businesses should confirm requirements with IRS.gov, state agencies, or a qualified advisor.

W-2 and 1099 Filing Volume: 2024

The IRS Statistics of Income Division recorded 4,637,956,645 total information and withholding documents for calendar year 2024, spanning W-2 wage statements and more than 20 distinct 1099-series forms. W-2 volume reached 275,028,211, while 1099-NEC filings climbed to 54,619,668, extending a multi-year growth trend that began when the form was reintroduced in 2020 to separate nonemployee compensation from Form 1099-MISC.

Yearli's filing workflows commonly support high-demand forms such as W-2 and 1099-NEC, which also appear prominently in IRS aggregate volume data. The IRS projects 1099-NEC volume will grow to 61,471,500 by CY2026, a 12.5% increase from CY2024, while W-2 volume is projected to decline slightly to 269,922,100 over the same period.

E-File Adoption Trend and FIRE-to-IRIS Transition

A regulatory shift that took effect for tax year 2023 dramatically expanded the population of businesses required to file electronically. Businesses with 10 or more returns that are required to be aggregated under the applicable e-file regulations must file electronically for tax years beginning in 2023, per IRS T.D. 9972. The change expanded the e-file requirement to many businesses that previously could choose paper filing for smaller batches.

IRS Publication 6961 tracks the split between paper and electronically processed returns. Paper filings are projected to fall from 3,964,231 in CY2024 to approximately 1,050,000 in CY2026, a 73.5% decline over two filing seasons. An additional system migration is pending: for forms currently supported by FIRE, filers will need to transition to IRIS for the 2027 filing season Yearli connects with 30+ payroll and accounting software platforms to help businesses move year-end data into the filing pipeline electronically: view integrations.

Year-End Reporting Form Breakdown: 2024

The 1099 series encompasses more than 20 form types. The table below presents CY2024 IRS-recorded volumes for the primary year-end reporting forms across the W-2, 1099, and 1095 families, organized in that order. Forms tied to financial intermediaries (broker transactions, interest, dividends) carry the highest raw volumes because financial institutions generate them at scale; forms that reflect direct payments to contractors are more relevant to the typical filer. Businesses can browse the full catalog of supported forms, including less common 1099 variants and ACA forms, at Yearli's Forms Library. Pub. 6961 does not separately report 1095-B or 1095-C volume in the table used below, but ACA forms are included for deadline and workflow context.

The projections show W-2 and 1099-NEC volumes moving in opposite directions. Publication 6961 does not identify the reasons for the trend.

Filing-Season Timing Patterns: 2027

Year-end information reporting concentrates into a narrow January-to-March window, with distinct pressure points depending on which forms a business files. The February 1, 2027 cutoff is the sharpest deadline because it is the simultaneous recipient copy and federal filing deadline for both W-2 and 1099-NEC forms, with no extended e-file window available. Businesses that miss this date for these forms do not have the February-to-March filing window that applies to many other 1099 types.

Yearli sees filing activity concentrated around major statutory deadlines, especially the final days before the February 1 cutoff, the March 1 paper filing deadline, and the March 31 e-file deadline. These windows can create operational pressure for businesses preparing forms close to deadline.

When January 31 falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the W-2 and 1099-NEC deadline shifts to the next business day. For tax year 2026 forms filed in early 2027, January 31 falls on a Sunday, moving the effective W-2 and 1099-NEC deadline to Monday, February 1, 2027. Visit Yearli's Deadlines page for year-specific adjustments and state-level deadline variations.

Filer-Size Segments: 2027

Filing volume, form type mix, and the e-file mandate each vary based on the size and structure of the business. For e-file mandate purposes, the relevant threshold is aggregate information return count (combining covered form types), not revenue. For purposes of this article, Yearli groups filers into the following operational categories, based on annual filing volume, to illustrate how the e-file mandate and available filing systems apply in practice.

The e-file threshold change that took effect for tax year 2023 most directly affected the Medium Filer segment: businesses filing 10 to 249 returns that previously were paper filers by choice now fall under the electronic mandate. Yearli's plans can support federal e-file, state reporting where applicable, and recipient delivery, with pricing and included services varying by plan.
